Privacy, in plain language

Short version: accounts are optional, and there are no ads and no analytics scripts. Here are the details.

If you don't make an account

You can use the whole course without one. We don't ask for your name, email address or any other personal information. To remember your progress and the words you type into the activities, the site saves a small piece of data in your browser's local storage under the name bb:v1. It stays on your device and isn't sent to us. You can erase it with the "Reset my progress" button on the Module 1 page or by clearing your browser's site data.

If you make an account

Creating an account is optional, and you must be 13 or older. If you create one, we store:

  • your email address;
  • your password, saved only as a one-way scrambled value (a hash), never as readable text;
  • your progress and the words you type into the activities, so they can follow you across devices;
  • a sign-in cookie named bb_session, which keeps you signed in for up to 30 days and is only used for that. A small flag named bb:acct in your browser's local storage notes that you're signed in;
  • a light or dark preference, if you choose one, is saved only in your browser (bb:theme) and is never sent to us.

We use your email only to let you sign in and to send password-reset links. We don't send marketing email, and we don't sell or share your information.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account at any time from the Account page. Deleting removes your email, password hash, saved progress and sign-in records from our database. Signing out clears the saved copy of your progress on that device.

Fonts from Google

The site loads its fonts (Bricolage Grotesque, Inter and Instrument Serif) from Google Fonts. When a page loads, your browser requests those fonts from Google's servers, which means Google receives your IP address and standard browser information as part of that request. See Google's own privacy policy for how it handles that data.

Server logs

Like most websites, the server that hosts this site keeps routine logs that can include IP addresses, the pages requested and the browser used. These logs help keep the site running and secure. They're managed by the hosting provider. To limit password guessing, the site also records attempts to sign in, sign up or reset a password, along with the IP address, for about a day.

Analytics and ads

The site doesn't run analytics scripts or advertising.

Who this site is for

Builder's Bastion is written for a general audience and isn't directed at children under 13. Accounts are only for people who are 13 or older, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top will change with it.
